FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Answers to some of the questions we're asked most often by small business owners.

How much will it cost to switch accountants?

We agree a fixed fee with you before any work begins, based on the size and complexity of your business. There's nothing hidden in the quote and you'll know exactly what to expect on your invoice.

Can you take over from my existing accountant part way through the year?

Yes, we handle the handover directly with your previous accountant, requesting the records and information we need. Most switches happen smoothly without any input needed from you beyond a signature or two.

Do I need bookkeeping software or can I keep using spreadsheets?

It depends on your business, but most clients find cloud software makes life easier and keeps them compliant with Making Tax Digital. We can set this up and train you and your team to use it.

What happens if my turnover approaches the VAT registration threshold?

We keep an eye on this for clients whose bookkeeping we manage and flag it well before registration becomes compulsory. That gives you time to plan rather than being caught out partway through a busy period.

Do you work with sole traders as well as limited companies?

Yes, we work with sole traders, partnerships and limited companies across South Devon. The support we offer is tailored to how your business is structured.

How often will I hear from you during the year?

That's largely up to you. Some clients prefer a quick conversation once a quarter, while others like to check in more regularly. Either way, we're always available if something comes up.

How far in advance do you prepare my self assessment return?

We start gathering information well before the January deadline, usually from the autumn onwards. That gives you time to plan for your tax bill and ask questions, rather than facing a last minute scramble.

Will I always deal with the same person?

You'll have a main point of contact who knows your business, supported by the wider team when needed. You won't be passed between departments or have to explain your situation from scratch each time you call.

They took over our bookkeeping when it had become a real headache and sorted it out within a couple of weeks. Our VAT returns are now the easiest part of the quarter, not the hardest.
