Getting a growing cafe ready for VAT

A seafront cafe outgrew its old spreadsheet system as turnover climbed towards the VAT threshold, so we helped them move to proper bookkeeping software and register in good time.

A family run cafe on the Teignmouth seafront came to us after a strong couple of summers pushed their turnover close to the VAT registration threshold. Their bookkeeping had been managed on a spreadsheet since the business opened, which had worked well enough at a smaller scale but was becoming difficult to keep accurate as trade grew.

We moved them onto cloud bookkeeping software, set up their till system to feed sales data through automatically and trained the owner and her assistant manager to use it day to day. We then handled the VAT registration process, timed to fit with their trading pattern rather than leaving it until the threshold was crossed unexpectedly.

The owner now has a clear view of takings and costs at any point in the month, rather than waiting for us to piece it together at year end. Her first few VAT returns went smoothly and she says the new system has taken a weight off her mind during the busy summer season.

They took over our bookkeeping when it had become a real headache and sorted it out within a couple of weeks. Our VAT returns are now the easiest part of the quarter, not the hardest.
