Moving a family shop onto digital records

A long established gift shop needed help moving from paper records to a digital system that met Making Tax Digital requirements.

A gift shop that has traded in Dawlish for more than twenty years had always kept its records on paper, filed away in ring binders at the end of each week. With Making Tax Digital requirements changing how VAT registered businesses must keep records, the owners needed a digital system and weren't confident choosing one themselves.

We assessed a few options against their needs, chose a straightforward piece of software suited to a small shop and set it up with their existing till and bank account linked in. We spent a morning in the shop with both owners showing them how to enter and check transactions.

Six months on, their VAT returns take a fraction of the time they used to and the owners can check how the shop is performing whenever they like rather than waiting for the books to be added up by hand. They have since recommended the same system to a neighbouring shop.

They took over our bookkeeping when it had become a real headache and sorted it out within a couple of weeks. Our VAT returns are now the easiest part of the quarter, not the hardest.
