Setting up payroll for a growing building firm

A building firm taking on its first employees needed payroll set up from scratch, along with guidance on pension auto enrolment duties.

A building contractor in Newton Abbot had operated as a sole trader for several years before deciding to take on two employees to keep up with demand. He had never run payroll before and wasn't sure where to start with tax, National Insurance or the pension duties that come with employing staff.

We registered him as an employer with HMRC, set up a payroll scheme and worked out the pay structure for his new team, including how to handle overtime for site work. We also assessed his auto enrolment duties and set up a pension scheme with a provider suited to a small business.

Payroll now runs each month without him needing to think about it. He sends us the hours worked, we handle the calculations and filing and his employees receive clear payslips on time. He has since taken on a third member of staff, confident that the payroll side will be straightforward to extend.

They took over our bookkeeping when it had become a real headache and sorted it out within a couple of weeks. Our VAT returns are now the easiest part of the quarter, not the hardest.
