A freelance graphic designer in Exeter came to us in her second year of self employment, having filed her first tax return herself and found it confusing. She had also done some part time employed work during the year, which meant her income came from more than one source and she wasn't sure how it all fitted together.
We gathered her income records, invoices and expenses and worked through what could reasonably be claimed against her freelance income, including a proportion of her home working costs. We combined this with her employment income to prepare a single self assessment return.
She now sends us her records each quarter rather than facing a scramble in January and has a much clearer sense of what to put aside for tax throughout the year. She says the biggest change has been simply understanding what the numbers mean, rather than treating tax as something to worry about once a year.
