A residential care home in Torquay was recruiting frequently to keep up with demand but found that a number of new starters left within their first few months. The recruitment process had grown informally over the years, with different managers running interviews in different ways and no consistent record of what had been discussed.
We worked with the registered manager to build a clear person specification for care roles, a structured interview format and a simple scoring system so candidates could be compared fairly. We also reviewed their induction process, since several early leavers had mentioned feeling unsupported in their first weeks.
Interviews now follow a consistent structure and every candidate is assessed against the same criteria, which has made shortlisting decisions easier to explain and defend. The home has also seen fewer early leavers since strengthening the induction period and managers say the new process takes less time overall despite being more thorough.
