Our moorland navigation days combine a full day's walk on Dartmoor with practical map and compass skills taught along the way rather than in a classroom beforehand. It suits anyone planning to walk the moor independently or simply wanting more confidence away from marked paths.
Groups are kept small so everyone gets a proper turn with the map and instructors adjust the route depending on weather, since visibility on Dartmoor can change quickly. We provide maps and compasses for the day, though guests are welcome to bring their own to practise with.
The day usually covers pacing, taking a bearing and reading the shape of the land itself, skills that matter more on open moorland than on a signposted trail. Sturdy boots and waterproofs are essential and we can advise on kit before the day if needed.
