The borders around this Chudleigh cottage had been planted decades ago and had become sparse and overgrown in places, with a lot of bare soil showing through by midsummer. The owners wanted a fuller, more informal look that suited the age of the house.
We reworked the borders with improved soil and a denser planting scheme built around perennials, allowing plants to knit together over the following two seasons rather than leaving gaps between them. Height and colour were staggered through the year so there is always something in flower.
By the following summer the borders had filled in noticeably, exactly as planned and the owners have reported far fewer weeds thanks to the denser planting leaving less bare soil exposed. They now have us back twice a year to keep on top of maintenance.
