The rear garden of this Brixham house dropped away steeply from the house, leaving most of it unused beyond a narrow patio near the back door. The owners wanted proper access to the whole plot, not just the flat section closest to the house.
We designed three terraces connected by stone steps, with retaining walls holding back each level. The lowest terrace was left largely open for planting and a small vegetable patch, while the level nearest the house became a proper seating and dining area.
Drainage was a key part of the design given the slope, with channels built in behind each retaining wall to manage rainwater. The garden now gets used from the back door right down to the bottom of the plot, which it never did before.
