Coast and harbours
South Devon's coastline runs from working harbours to long sandy beaches, often only a short drive from one of our cottages. Fishing boats still land their catch each morning in the older harbour towns and coastal paths link most of the villages for anyone who prefers to arrive on foot.
Tides and weather shape the coast throughout the year, so an estuary that is calm and still in the morning can look completely different by the afternoon. Guests often tell us the changing light on the water is one of the things they remember most from their stay.
Dartmoor and the countryside
Several of our cottages sit close enough to Dartmoor to reach open moorland within a short walk or drive, with granite tors, grazing ponies and quiet farm lanes typical of the landscape. Waymarked routes suit an easy afternoon out, while longer paths cross open moor for more experienced walkers.
Away from the moor, the countryside is a patchwork of small fields, wooded valleys and quiet lanes connecting the market towns. It rewards slow exploration rather than a rushed itinerary and a car is useful for reaching some of the more out of the way spots.
Market towns and villages
The market towns across South Devon each have their own character, from independent shops and weekly markets to cafes and small museums. Most are compact enough to explore on foot once you have found somewhere to park and several hold a regular market worth timing a visit around.
Smaller villages tend to have a single shop, a pub and a church, which is often all a quiet break really needs. We are always happy to point guests towards a favourite spot near their particular cottage.
