Grief without a timeline

Why there is no correct pace for grief and why coming to counselling months or years later is common.

One of the most common worries we hear from bereaved clients is that they should be further along than they are, whether that is weeks, months or years after a loss. There is no set timeline that grief is supposed to follow.

Some people find that grief becomes more difficult once the initial support from friends and family has quietened down, often some months after a loss, when daily life is expected to have returned to normal but has not.

Coming to counselling at any point after a loss, however much time has passed, is a legitimate reason to seek support. There is no expiry date on needing to talk about someone you have lost.
